How to stop your dog from pulling on the leash – Informations! When you own a dog, one of the most important things you need to teach them is how to behave when they are on a leash. Many people hesitate to do leash training a dog because they assume it is going to be difficult to train their dog and they do not know the steps needed to do it right. Many dog owners face the problem of leash pulling. Dogs often pull on the leash because they want to escape, this is especially the case with puppies. I so often see dogs taking their owners for walks when in reality it should be the other way around, owners taking dogs for a walk. This behavior is irritating, and if your dog does manage to escape, he could get himself into real trouble – especially in busy city neighborhoods. Sometimes dogs pull on the leash because they are overly excited. When this is the case, a simple thing you can do to calm them down is to stop walking. Wait for some few minutes and then continue on your way. Give your dog an opportunity to calm down, and he will be much more relaxed. You might find your dog pulling on the leash if it wants to confront another dog. This comes from your dog wanting to show dominance, so the simple way to solve this problem is for you to show your dog that you are the dominant one. To have a well trained and under control dog when walking him with a leash, you’ll need to take your time and slowly teach your dog that you are the leader and he must follow your guidance when on the leash. The best way to do this is to command your dog to sit while walking him (when he has the leash around him). Don’t continue walking until your dog has followed your order. This will slowly teach your dog that you remain in control when he has the leash on and that you are the leader.

One of the effective ways you can get your dog to stop pulling on the leash is to cement yourself as the leader. You can do this by stopping multiple times during the walk. Each time you stop, make your dog follow some command for example to sit is probably the easiest. By stopping five to six times during each walk, your dog will quickly learn that you call the shots.

Here are some steps on how to stop your dog from pulling on the leash:

The first step is to get your dog used to wear a collar if they do not already have one. The collar is vital for them to wear because, without it, you will not have anywhere to hook the leash to. Spend some time in getting them used to wear their collar before you put a leash on them.

The second step is to show your dog that you are the alpha dog and they need to follow your commands. This is achieved with verbal commands from you when the dog is on the leash. Just be sure you use the same commands and training each time you put them on the leash, so it will be easier for them to understand what behavior you expect them to do.

As you begin to walk with your dog on the leash, be sure to ensure the leash is short so that the dog stays by your side when you walk. If the dog starts pulling or running ahead, stop right away in place and give them the command to lay down or sit.

If they listen to your command, then give them praise for listening to your verbal command. Then you want to take a few steps back and begin walking again.

Each time that your dog pulls or runs ahead, repeat this process. Soon the dog will learn that every time they do this, it is going to stop their walk and exploring, which is not what any dog likes.

You can take treats on the walk with you and give them to your dog every time they give you the behavior you want from them. With time and more training, you want to be sure though that you increase the time frame in between each treat so that they eventually get to the point where they are well behaved on the leash every time without the need for a treat.

Leash training a dog is as simple as that, but it is going to require time, persistence, consistency and patience from you to teach them how they are expected to behave when on the leash. Each dog can learn this if you just give them time and repeat the training until they do know and give you the behavior you want each time they go for a walk or are put on a leash.
