The Health Benefits of Antioxidants
We are constantly bombarded with the term antioxidants and that it is good for our health. What exactly is it and how beneficial is it to human health? Antioxidants can be described as vitamins and minerals that protect our cells from free radical damage. Free radicals are unstable molecules that attack our healthy cells, causing a myriad of health problems if not checked. Research has shown that free radicals play a contributory role in cancer development and even cause cardiovascular diseases, brain dysfunction among other health problems. Regular intake of antioxidant from food and supplements like astaxanthin helps maintain healthy cells and body. They protect the body from exposure to chemicals, radiation, pollution and metabolism byproducts. Antioxidants like vitamin C and E, flavonoids, beta-carotene, catechins, and lutein among others are found in specific foods and dietary supplements. Junk foods, however, tend to have lower levels of antioxidants, this comes as no surprise.
